CFL Combine Day


Should have just called today Big Wade day. Nice job Man.
40-yard dash
The 40-yard dash is the marquee event at the combine. It's kind of like the 100-meters at the Olympics: It's all about speed, explosion and watching skilled athletes run great times. These athletes are timed at 10, 20 and 40-yard intervals. What the scouts are looking for is an explosion from a static start.

Bench press
The bench press is a test of strength -- 225 pounds, as many reps as the athlete can get. What the NFL scouts are also looking for is endurance. Anybody can do a max one time, but what the bench press tells the pro scouts is how often the athlete frequented his college weight room for the last 3-5 years.

Vertical jump
The vertical jump is all about lower-body explosion and power. The athlete stands flat-footed and they measure his reach. It is important to accurately measure the reach, because the differential between the reach and the flag the athlete touches is his vertical jump measurement.

Broad jump
The broad jump is like being in gym class back in junior high school. Basically, it is testing an athlete's lower-body explosion and lower-body strength. The athlete starts out with a stance balanced and then he explodes out as far as he can. It tests explosion and balance, because he has to land without moving.

3 cone drill
The 3 cone drill tests an athlete's ability to change directions at a high speed. Three cones in an L-shape. He starts from the starting line, goes 5 yards to the first cone and back. Then, he turns, runs around the second cone, runs a weave around the third cone, which is the high point of the L, changes directions, comes back around that second cone and finishes.

Shuttle run
The short shuttle is the first of the cone drills. It is known as the 5-10-5. What it tests is the athlete's lateral quickness and explosion in short areas. The athlete starts in the three-point stance, explodse out 5 yards to his right, touches the line, goes back 10 yards to his left, left hand touches the line, pivot, and he turns 5 more yards and finishes.

Another Recipe for the Paleo Folks

Paleo Chicken Scallopini Over Spaghetti Squash
Ingredients:
4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
2 T olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 C almond meal
1 T dried parsley
pinch sea salt and 1 tsp. black pepper
1/2 C sliced mushrooms
2 T capers
2 T lemon juice
1/4 C white wine (or chicken broth)
1 lemon, thinly sliced

Spaghetti squash

Recipe:
Pound chicken breasts pretty thin (about 1/4 inch). Combine almond meal, parsley, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan. Dredge chicken breasts in almond flour mixture. Brown chicken breast in olive oil, about 5 minutes on each side. Remove chicken breasts. In same pan, add garlic and mushrooms and saute until tender (you may need to add a tad more olive oil). Add wine and deglaze pan. Stir in capers and lemon juice. Add chicken breasts back to pan. Place thinly sliced lemons over the chicken pieces, cover, and cook for another 10 minutes. Serve over a bed of spaghetti squash & enjoy a Paleo-friendly Italian meal!

***I probably used about 2 cups of sliced mushrooms!
I have substituted spaghetti squash for noodles and I have been very satisfied. (Kyle)

Bring a Friend this Saturday. Class Times are 9am 10am and 11:30am. Weather permitting we will be doing a benchmark WOD named "Kelly".

CFL @ 18 Hours of Fruita May 6th & 7th

Guys we need to register our team for 18 Hours just to make sure we get a spot. We are planning on an 8 person team but we can do another team if the #'s are there. With 8 people it's $80/Person. Check out the info. for the race here. The event will begin Friday the 6th in the afternoon and go through the night into Saturday the 7th. The course is just over a 6 mile loop, non-technical riding. This should be a lot of fun so if you're in please get cash or a check made out to Ian Starr. Thanks!

Spicy Coconut Pork Chops

I'm a coconut lover! I'm convinced you can use coconut to enhance just about any meal! Coconut is wonderful because it can be mild, potent, spicy and sweet! ... A versatile cooking ingredient I just love! It also has wonderful health benefits! It's a great source of energy. As a medium chain fatty acid, it's stored in the liver and ready to use for energy! It boosts metabolism. It's an intestinal healer! And... it helps fight off infections! Hope you enjoy!

Recipe:
8 pork chops
2 T coconut oil
1 yellow onion, sliced
1/2 C coconut milk
2 T lime juice
1 tsp. olive oil
Seasoning:
1/2 C unsweetened, shredded coconut
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. red chili flakes
1/4 tsp. turmeric
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
pinch sea salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Rub a little olive oil over the pork chops. In a zip lock bag add all the seasonings. In a skillet, heat the coconut oil. Add pork chops to zip lock bag and shake to coat pork chops evenly (it may not look like enough seasoning, but it was just enough). Brown pork chops in coconut oil, and place on a baking dish. Add onions to skillet. Saute until tender, adding lime juice to deglaze pan. Add coconut milk to skillet and pour over pork chops. Cover with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes. Serve with your choice of vegetable side. We enjoyed some steamed broccoli!

***I (Corene) did not have shredded coconut on hand, so omitted it from the recipe. It still came out AWESOME and made great breakfast leftovers too!

Hello all. As you know nutrition is a very important part of fitness. Jeremy is finishing up case studies this month for his certification program and is going to be offering free evaluations of your nutrition in exchange for logging your food for the next week or so. He needs to evaluate at least 30 people. You don't have to count calories just track what your eating and eyeball the quantity. This is a good practice for all of us from time to time to get a snapshot of where we are at with our nutrition. Email Jeremy directly if you are interested at jeremy@projectfit.com. He will send you a google document with a template for a food log. In order to access this you will have to have a google account. If you need help setting this up Jeremy would be happy to help you. This a is great chance to help him out and get some feedback on your nutrition.

These totally awesome shirts were designed by our very own CFL Kids Instructor Mr. Derek Couse so make sure and thank him when you see him. They were originally supposed to be for the kids but adults were requesting them. Price will be $30 each. If the prototypes we have available (shortly) do not seem to work for your body type we will refer you to the site and you can pick another shirt if you like. We don't want to have an order with 32 different variations but we also want everyone to be able to get a T if they would like to. Attention CrossFit Kids Parents

Monday’s 5:00 Little Tyke’s class will be held at Weaver Park for the kids to enjoy a snow/sledding WOD. Please dress your kid(s) appropriately (boots, gloves, snow pants) as they will be working out in the snow. If they have a sled they can bring, that would be helpful. Coaches will be at the park early (4:45) so feel free to drop the little ones off and still head to CFL for your normal WOD. If you need your child brought back to the gym after the park, let Derek know and that can be arranged.
