Thanks Steve for finding this...way to make me feel even better about my lifting ability, or lack there of! AWESOME! Oh well it gives me something to strive for..learn to lift like a 7 year old!
While those kids had awesome form, I personally do not think that kids this age should be doing oly lifts. I know that my joints get really sore after doing some of these. I am not a medical professional, but couldn't this be unhealthy for people of this age to perform movements with a lot of weight? Any thoughts?
I will put it out there that kids in the modern era don't really do hard, physical work on a regular basis. At least not in 1st world countries. Does hard physical labor (inclusive of moving heavy loads) in less developed countries or did it in times of old, stunt children's growth or affect them adversely?
but I agree with Adam, heavy oly lifts can't be good for kids. Look at the stunted growth of gynasts. And I'd say heavy child labor did negatively affect people in "olden" times (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005140.html) and in 3rd world countries--look at the life expectancy in the 3rd world (http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com). The Fair Labor Standards Act was passed in 1938 and since then (until recently anyway) LE has gone up on average more than 13 years. Yes, there are some flaws in that reasoning--just sayin, though...
I don't think that you can honestly compare sweatshop/child labor in 3rd world countries with oly lifting 30min-1hr a couple times a week. These kids all looked like they were playing and having fun.
Adam - I don't see this as an issue. They were not lifting that much. Second - have you seen kids try oly lifting or squats or pretty much anything in the gym? They rock at it - naturally. They are nimble and limber.
That said - as will most things kid related - don't try without adult supervision (hopefully sain adult supervision) and take it easy with slow progression.
Yeah, I also agree that these kids were having fun. I know I did some crazy stuff when i was younger that would kill me now and I agree that adult supervision is essential. I still am not convinced that I have seen enough scientific studies to show that it is not dangerous for young kids to do. I know that 6 or 7 year olds are entirely different from say even a 13yr old. I enjoy all of your input though.

Ya, you're old Adam. Just kidding! I don't know. Surely it's a good question.

The Mayo clinic seems to think it is OK:
